Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th 2001 attacks on our nation, where 2,753 people lost their lives in New York City. Of those were 411 emergency workers. The sacrifices of first responders did not end that day. Since then, the total number of first responders’ deaths due to 9/11-related illness and tower collapse is close to 1,000; the full health toll of September 11 continues to unfold 25 years later. Without the services, dedication, and bravery from those first responders, significantly more lives would have been lost in New York City that day.
15 years ago, the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade (KMVFB) created a memorial in the Kings Mountain Community Center’s garden to honor those who lost their lives due to the September 11 attacks. It includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center lost that day. If you have a chance, please visit the memorial and take a moment to remember those who lost their lives, those who sacrificed so that others might live, and the many first responders and others who continue to bear the consequences of that day.
