How to Join

We are actively recruiting firefighters and medical responders to join our amazing team. Learn lifesaving skills, engage in exciting and rewarding work and give back to your community.

Qualifications

Qualifications and application requirements for training and service with the Kings Mountain Fire Department (KMFD) include:

  • Live inside the initial response area of the KMFD.
  • Interview with KMFD Officers.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam, drug screening, and cardiac stress test.

Initial Training

Initial Volunteer Medical Responder:

  • Minimum of 24 hours of medical response training, with the goal of completing an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses in the future.
  • 20 hours of hazardous materials training.
  • 16 hours of safety and orientation.

Initial Volunteer Firefighter:

  • All training listed above for Medical Responder.
  • 56 hours of structural firefighting.
  • 48 hours of wildland firefighting.
  • ~50 hours additional volunteer firefighting academy training.

On-Going Training

KMFD schedules training each Thursday night, 1900-2200.

There are also occasional scheduled multi-company drills other than Thursday nights, for enhanced skills.

KMFD Responders are required to attend at least one training each month, but are strongly encouraged to attend as many trainings as possible to keep skills current and maintain appropriate expertise, and to develop new skills and learn new procedures.
